About the Author
William Bay is president of Mel Bay Publications, Inc. He is an accomplished guitarist and trumpet player and has performed on both instruments in a wide variety of professional settings. He is experienced as a performer and composer of music ranging from jazz and rock to the classics and sacred. He received his bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis and his master's from the University of Missouri. Bill has received international acclaim for his innovative teaching methods, and he has authored over 200 books with sales in the millions.

A challenge lies ahead!

This book represents the highest I've achieved in the Mel Bay Guitar Method Grade series. I have successfully played through W. Leavitt's Berklee 1 and half of 2. I really prefer the way Mel Bay lays things out in these books. However, there is very little writing regarding the exercise. I only gave it four stars because there is very little or no analysis indicating - how does this relate to playing the guitar generally? For example, you may very well be playing an 8th position C Chord in a song, but if I didn't play popular music or blues, I would never know it. So, a little more analysis would be good - as well as something in the book to say "Here is what you should get out of this book". What if you are not using a teacher - and you are just using the CD? There are no educational objectives other than your common sense and the table of contents.
However ,all things considered, these books are gems and I found this a welcome challenge.

Whew

To start with, I respect all of the Mel Bay music instruction books, and I have quite a few, from Grade 1 to (now) Grade 4, as well as the Mel Bay chord book and the "intro to" books on rock, blues, and jazz. Out of all the music books I have, the Mel Bay series are the ones I go to for definitive information about all aspects of reading music. M.B. covers everything they ever taught me in school band and choir, although a student would benefit from having someone to guide them and explain what the notation means - 1 sharp thru 4, 1 flat thru 4, (the "key", in other words) tempo, and terminology -sostenuto, pianissimo, dc al coda, etc. I haven't had a teacher for guitar, per se, but all the years of music in school are my foundation. Grade 4 is some deeper stuff to me, so it'll be a while getting through it, but it's a part of my journey, not a destination. As always, I appreciate the spiral binding and the CDs that make life easier, and Amazon makes finding the best prices a lot easier. So you just have to ask yourself if you want to understand musical notation or if you want to make do with tab or sounding stuff out. I choose Mel Bay.
