Exceptional book - Bad translation.

I love the book . I first read it in my Advanced Placement French Language/Literature class. After reading this particular English translation - the Penguin version - I was dismayed at the lack of English grammar the translator exhibited. The book has major grammar mistakes in almost every chapter. Some of these mistakes are not too picky either. For example, the subjunctive mood is often tossed aside by the author. I recommend the book to everyone, but please purchase a different translation - he didn't do the best job with this one. Enjoy!

The text presented here is a disgrace, replete with typographical errors, and missing entire paragraphs on p.80. I would have returned it except that I had already written notes on it. Do not buy this edition.

A good story

This book is one of Maupassant's finest works. It concerns the intruiges between two brothers (Pierre et Jean) when Jean inherits a large sum of money from a "familly friend" whom Pierre secretly suspects of being the father of his brother Jean. A great book, and a very interesting look at French society in the mid 1880's.

Fantastic summary of the race car driving "essentials"

Carroll Smith outlines all the skills and attributes that it takes to be a first class driver. There are sections on race craft, fitness both mental and physical, chassis tuning, tire selection, data acquisition, and general tuning concepts. A well-written and informative book for the race car driver both experienced and novice. Unlike some of the other books that I have read in this category, it was entertaining and informative as opposed to the "text book" style that seems to be so common!

A perfect addition to Mr. Smith's line of books is "Drive to Win". If you wish to improve your skills as a hobbyist or professional then read this book. The book is slightly slanted to the race driver who wishes to enter the professional ranks, but is very informative for the non-professional as well.

A book for who wants to become a RACEDRIVER

I have read 3 books about racecar driving recently, they are 1. Speed secret 2. Think to win 3. Drive to win. In these books, "Speed secret" is the most simple one like a introduction of racing drive; "Think to win" is a little more complex, let you know how thinking leads to win; "Drive to win" let you understand more way to analysis driving. It contains almost everything what a professional racedriver must know. If you want to master in driving, must read it. My suggestion is to buy another book about this topic and compare two opinions-you will find which old tale is wong (or you can say, not complete).

A fascinating look at the greatest city

E.B. White was a very accomplished writer. His books and essays are some the best literature we have. His short book "Here Is New York" provides a good example of his gift as a generator of beautiful prose. He wrote this piece in 1948 and as the writer of the introduction, Roger Angell states White confronts the task with the knowledge that what he writes at his time will not endure because the city is ever changing metropolis. White likes to write with a heavy use of metaphor and he constantly anthropomorphizing what the city of New York has to offer us. He speaks of three basic types of individuals who spend their day in the city: the commuter who never really gets to know the city, the native individual who takes the city for granted and the ones who move in later in life who are in love with the city and enthralled with it's bill of fare. I enjoyed the book. It was fascinating to hear him speak of the boroughs that have evolved with the city. If he were to write the essay today I think he would be dismayed by the further disappearance of the places that he cherished and yet he would continue to express the belief that it is the greatest city in the world.

A glimpse of old New York, inspiring for today's readers

I've loved E.B.White's writing ever since a grade school teacher read Charlotte's Web aloud to the class, chapter by chapter. His writing is unique, clear and memorable, whether he is writing about what he sees out his window or about life in New York walking down a busy sidewalk, masses of people all around him. While life in New York has changed significantly since E.B. White first wrote the words contained in this book, readers will find his writing also timeless in spirit and inspirational in invoking a renewed appreciation for New York and the little details that make it special. White once said of his writing: 'Writing to me is not an exercise in addressing readers, it is more as though I were talking to myself while shaving'. If only we could all be as articulate, memorable and even humorous while talking to ourselves and others! A very special book, worth reading and re-reading.

In these gracefully written essays, full of interesting vignettes and case studies drawn from his 45 years of practice, he urges doctors to practice attentive listening, to desist from using intimidating language and to pay attention to the emotional stresses in patients' lives. Keeping an open mind toward alternative medicine, Lown describes his partially successful treatment in China with acupuncture for his severe back pain. Despite huge technological advancements, today's medicine is in a state of crisis, claims Lown (professor emeritus in cardiology at Harvard and cofounder of Physicians Against Nuclear War). Emphasizing that nothing can replace listening and careful history taking, Lown laments that doctors have now substituted technology for taking time with the patient, shifting their medical focus from healing the patient to curing the disease. In a teaching style reminiscent of Sir William Osler, Lown extracts from his 50 years of medical practice case histories and examples of the clinical wisdom that enable a doctor to comprehend essential medical problems. Despite his Oslerian call to return today's depersonalized medicine to the art of doctoring, he evinces little optimism that his wisdom will be heeded in this age of Medicare and managed care. Cardiologist Lown combines autobiography with a plea for thoughtful and individual medical care of each patient. Although he draws his case illustrations from 40 years of practice and research, his is no nostalgic voice reporting from some comfortable ivory tower. He vigorously opposed the traditional prolonged bed rest for heart patients, pioneered in the establishment of cardiac care units, invented direct current cardioversion, which has saved many lives, and made other valuable contributions. He was one of the first Western physicians to visit China and later benefited from acupuncture treatments. In 1985 he and a Russian physician, cofounders of Physicians Against Nuclear War, received the Nobel Peace Prize. Healing, he asserts, has been replaced in his time by treating, caring by managing, and the art of listening by technological procedures. He points out that malpractice cases are not the cause of what ails U.S. medicine but are instead a symptom of the real cause--failure in the art of healing. William Beatty

Helping physicians recapture their focus

I bought a copy for myself, and now I am trying to give a copy to everybody I know who is involved in patient care. Most of us went into the medical field with noble aspirations to take care of others and in doing so, to grow ourselves as human beings. The process of going through a medical education debases in many respects our initial aspirations. I read this book and found myself recentered. Dr. Lown approaches medicine as an opportunity to glean from the people for whom he cares. The book is filled with anecdotes gathered from decades of doctoring. The stories lead the reader along the same journey that the author has taken in coming to a sense of himself as a healer. The characters whom have filled his life are interesting and the story of Dr. Lown's personal journey from medical student, to researcher to teacher and master clinician, is fascinating. I highly recommend this book. It has changed the way that I approach my work and given me a zest for opportunities to grow in this profession.

Well intentioned book, little wisdom

I don't doubt that Dr. Lown is a good man and a good doctor and that this is a well-intentioned book. However, I found very little wisdom in it and too many generalities and long winded stories. The odd thing about the positive reviews so far is that none of them are by anyone with any reviews of other books about medicine. It is not clear what the book really has to offer. I would not recommend it.

An Inspirational work for Aspiring Medical Students

In a profession dominated increasingly by science and technology, it is heartening to hear a courageous voice who spoke forcefully and emphatically against the dehumanization of medicine and for the urgent need to return to the traditional ethos of medicine. This coming no less from a physician of Dr Lown's stature and credentials, a technological wizard who had given the world the first cardioverter and DC defribillator. and yet managed to stay aloof and above the lure of medical scientific and technical sophistry which had captured the awe and fantasy of many of today's medical students and doctors alike. Debunking the myth of the omnipotence of clinical medicine, Dr Lown sought to reconcile the divide between the art and science of medicine, advocating a more humane approach towards the management of patients. He is both a philosopher and a healer, equipped with an open mind and divergent mindset extending beyond the normal confines of medical practice. As a young medical student struggling with the heavy workload imposed by an explosion of medical scientific knowledge, Dr Lown's book is thought-provoking and inspiring, a timely reminder that knowledge and academic grades are merely a means to an end and that human qualities such as empathy, compassion and a sound understanding of the human condition is not only crucial in medical practice, but must be reinforced and developed in the impressionable medical student navigating through rigors and constraints of his studies and training.
