Beautiful book, buy it NOW!
By Richard A. Rossi
This book is an absolute bargain. The art is gorgeous, and very well reproduced. Thankfully, NONE of the artwork spans more than one page, and cuts the piece in half. All of the prints are on the right page, and a commentary (including date, title, and size) is on the left page. My only complaint is the text. Parkes actually comments on approximately 1 in 4 of the prints. The rest of the comments are not words of the artist, but "meaningful interpretations" from misc. sources. The commentary from these sources varies from interesting to pathetic. IMHO, the only comments worth reading are the ones from the Parkes, which are in quotations. All in all though, this is a MUST BUY if you like the work of Parkes. You will be delighted, I guarantee it.

A Fabulous Collection of Michael Parkes' Paintings
By Some Dude from Cali
I am a big fan of Michael Parkes' paintings. They are captivating because of the way the surreal imagery is blended with a realistic landscape. The earth tones mixed with the fantastic are breathtaking. His color usage is what makes me love his paintings. This book is a great collection of some of his best works. (There were, however, only a few of my favorite paintings missing, like Unwinding, Moonstone and The Old Ways) The best thing about this book is that it is up-to-date with the latest paintings as of 1998! Each painting comes with some words to help get a better understanding of it. It's not a wordy book, which puts the focus on the paintings where it belongs. Parkes' paintings have struck me deeply ever since I discovered this brilliant artist. If you have liked Parkes' artwork and you are trying to find an up-to-date collection of his paintings, then this is the right book for you and it is well preserved in hard cover!

Beautiful and Informative
By Kimberly
This book contains not only a wonderful collection of works by Mr. Parkes, it also has a short statement from the artist on the meaning behind, or the inspiration for the piece. He gives you just enough information to see where he is coming from, without interfering with personal interperetations. A great gift! (Thanks for the book, Dad!)

The last thing Jo Burkhart ever thought she’d do was have a one night stand…

But when a little harmless, coffee shop flirting with high-powered Broadway and television director Benjamin Paul leads to a steamy proposition, how could a romance novelist like Jo resist?

The last thing Ben Paul needed was to fall in love…

But when he lands in bed with a down-to-earth, genuine Jo—a woman who doesn’t want anything from him but an afternoon of passion—his heart gets carried away. He can’t let it end with one night.

The last thing either of them needed was for their worlds to collide…

But when Ben’s career implodes under the weight of salacious rumors, and Jo finds herself on the verge of losing her family’s house in Maine, they may be the only people who can save each other from disaster…

…unless being together creates an even bigger disaster for both.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: Steam level – VERY hot.

Fantastic!
By Anita67
Romance author Jo Burkhart, never thought she’d have a one night stand, but that's just what she did one day when she met theatre & tv director, Benjamin Paul while sitting unbeknownst to her, at his regular table in a New York coffee shop.

Jo has been suffering from 'writers block' & needed a bit of inspiration & Ben could help her get her book back on track as she has a house in Maine that requires a lot of upkeep & she desperately needs the money to keep it.

Ben has his own problems. His career is being threatened by salacious rumours & he needs to get away for his own sanity & decides that Jo is the only one who can help him.
He comes to realise he just doesn't want one night with her, he wants her for keeps!

'Catch a Falling Star' is Merry Farmer's 3rd book in the 'Second Chances' contemporary series.
Some of the characters & places in this are also mentioned in previous books & if you have read them, you will know & love them already, but it's not really necessary as they are all stand alone novels & are a great read & believe me, you won't want to put them down!

After being a longtime fan of Merry's period novels/series, I must say I love that these are contemporary books in this series, as they have modern, believable storylines & the characters are all very likeable & you get lost in the stories.
I can't wait for the next one!

A Romance for a romance writer
By jhobbs
I have read 9 Merry Farmer books in the last 6 months, 8 in the Hot on the Trail Series and The Advisor from the Fabulous Dalton Boys series. I enjoyed them. However, the writing in this book is better than any of the others. Witty. Smooth. Well edited and proofread. Emotionally intense at times. Just better.

The story revolves around a romance writer named Jo and a sexy Broadway director named Ben. They meet in a coffee shop and have a steamy beginning. Things sort of roller coaster from there to the end.

“I’ve been in this business long enough to see that the people who ooze honey tend not to see how many flies they’ve attracted until they’re covered in them.” Yvonne talking about Ben.

This is the third book in the series, but I have not read the other two. It was a $.99 special, so I got it and read it. If you have read The Advisor, those characters watch Second Chances, the TV series made in this series.

Ben is a smooth operator...just sayin'....
By TracyVin
***I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are 100% my own.***

We find Jo in New York on a trip to visit her book agent. She heads into a coffee house, and unknowingly sits at Ben’s table. He comes over and they hit it off, well enough that when he propositions her for a quickie at his apartment, she, uncharacteristically, agrees. While in New York, she was given not-so-great news, and she heads back to Maine. Meanwhile, Ben’s career is taking a major nose-dive because of some salacious financiers. Ben heads to Maine and that’s when things get interesting…

I liked Jo. She struggled. She was simple in her needs, complicated in her thoughts, and true to her emotions. I liked Ben, though he was not simple in his needs, he was likable. He was truly that likable rake. You didn’t really WANT to like him, but he was honest about himself and he was charming. He had this almost little boy charm about him. We see Spence and Tasha, and Simon and Jenny, and of course we see Yvonne. I love Yvonne. You don’t want to, she’s bossy, over-stepping, and almost always right. And in this story, we’re watching the start of another between….well, you’ll have to read it. I won’t give that away for you. :)

Ms. Farmer’s Second Chances tv show world is growing more complex with each book. And it’s wonderful that we’re getting slowly more immersed in it. It’s like watching a tv series. You hyper focus on one set of characters for an episode, but before the season is over, you’ve met them all, seen several different dramatic moments, and get an idea of the theme and purpose of the entire show, and how all these different people are more alike than different. These books have been that way for me. So, would I recommend them for you to read? Yes, I would. They’re steamy, more so than many of her other books. So, if the nookie bothers you, I would refrain.

Death of Innocence: The Story of the Hate Crime That Changed America, by Mamie Till-Mobley, Christopher Benson

There are many heroes of the civil rights movement—men and women we can look to for inspiration. Each has a unique story, a path that led to a role as leader or activist. Death of Innocence is the heartbreaking and ultimately inspiring story of one such hero: Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till—an innocent fourteen-year-old African-American boy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and who paid for it with his life. His outraged mother’s actions galvanized the civil rights movement, leaving an indelible mark on American racial consciousness.

Mamie Carthan was an ordinary African-American woman growing up in 1930s Chicago, living under the strong, steady influence of her mother’s care. She fell in love with and married Louis Till, and while the marriage didn’t last, they did have a beautiful baby boy, Emmett.

In August 1955, Emmett was visiting family in Mississippi when he was kidnapped from his bed in the middle of the night by two white men and brutally murdered. His crime: allegedly whistling at a white woman in a convenience store. His mother began her career of activism when she insisted on an open-casket viewing of her son’s gruesomely disfigured body. More than a hundred thousand people attended the service. The trial of J. W. Milam and Roy Bryant, accused of kidnapping and murdering Emmett (the two were eventually acquitted of the crime), was considered the first full-scale media event of the civil rights movement.

What followed altered the course of this country’s history, and it was all set in motion by the sheer will, determination, and courage of Mamie Till-Mobley—a woman who would pull herself back from the brink of suicide to become a teacher and inspire hundreds of black children throughout the country.

Mamie Till-Mobley, who died in 2003 just as she completed this memoir, has honored us with her full testimony: “I focused on my son while I considered this book. . . . The result is in your hands. . . . I am experienced, but not cynical. . . . I am hopeful that we all can be better than we are. I’ve been brokenhearted, but I still maintain an oversized capacity for love.” Death of Innocence is an essential document in the annals of American civil rights history, and a painful yet beautiful account of a mother’s ability to transform tragedy into boundless courage and hope.

From Publishers Weekly
Nearly 50 years after the murder of Emmett Till, his mother, Till-Mobley, has added her perspective on the tragedy. In what came to be seen as a seminal event in the fledgling civil rights movement, two white men abducted 14-year-old Emmett from the home of a relative in rural Mississippi in August 1955. That night they tortured the boy before dumping his lifeless body into the Tallahatchie River. His crime: he inadvertently whistled in the vicinity of a white woman who happened to be the wife of one of his killers. Although the events surrounding the murder have been recounted many times, Till-Mobley fills readers in on her son's childhood in Argo, Ill., and later Chicago. As a single mother, she tried to instill Emmett with self-confidence and a sense of life's possibilities. In her view, these two qualities helped cause his death when he journeyed to Mississippi, where the "code" demanded that blacks efface themselves in the presence of whites. Her memoir, written with Chicago journalist Benson, is told chronologically, with a large portion devoted to the events leading up to the murder and its aftermath. As she puts it, "I wanted to rip the sheets off the state of Mississippi." Till-Mobley, who died last January, spent the final 35 years of her life as a teacher and spokesperson for civil rights. While her accomplishments are admirable, her memoir has a perfunctory quality, except when describing the events surrounding Emmett's murder, and the narrative voice is uneven. Till-Mobley was a social activist but not necessarily a social critic. As a result, the example of her life is far more valuable than the insights that she draws from it.

From Booklist
The mere mention of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old Chicago boy murdered in Mississippi in 1955, brings horrific memories for Americans. Till, on vacation in the south, was reportedly killed for whistling at a white woman. His murder and mutilation--he was wrapped in barbed wire and thrown into a river--shook the conscience of America and became a central stimulus for the modern civil rights movement. The graphic brutality of the murder and the courage of Till's mother were imprinted on American consciousness as she chose an open casket that displayed the horror of the crime to the world. In this as-told-to memoir, Till-Mobley recalls her son's early childhood through his 14 years of life. The second half of the book focuses on Till-Mobley herself, a woman determined to find meaning in the life and murder of her young son. Relying on the love and support of family, Till-Mobley earned college degrees late in life, works with the church, and makes a career of giving hope to other youth, surely meeting her objective that her son not have died in vain. Review
Advance praise for Death of Innocence

“I am so thankful for the bravery and courage Mamie demonstrated when she shared her only child with the world. The news of Emmett’s death caused many people to participate in the cry for justice and equal rights, including myself. The respect I have felt for her since 1955 will always live with me. She was blessed among women to carry the mantle with grace and dignity.”
—Rosa Parks

“Death of Innocence reveals Mamie Till-Mobley for what she was: one of the greatest, but largely unsung, heroes in all of African-American history. Her words are powerful; her strength and vision in the face of the unspeakable horror of her son’s death are astonishing. The life and work of Mamie Till-Mobley serves as an inspiration to all who love justice."
—Stanley Nelson, executive producer and director of the documentary The Murder of Emmett Till

“Mamie Till-Mobley has written a powerful book in which she reveals to us the life she shared with her son, Emmett Till, and her pride and joy as he became a remarkable young man. This story shows us how the cruelty of a few changed the life of a loving, caring mother and the history of a nation.”
—Kadiatou Diallo, author of My Heart Will Cross This Ocean: My Story, My Son, Amadou

“An epic drama of despair and hope. The most powerful personal story, so far, from the civil rights movement.”
—Morris Dees, Southern Poverty Law Center

“Mamie Till-Mobley has always deserved our admiration for her insistence that the world know her son’s terrible fate, and for her determination to confront his killers in a Mississippi courtroom. Now, in the final act of her life, she gives us an account of the crime, its victim, and its aftermath that is as historically valuable as it is inspiring.”
—Philip Dray, author of At the Hands of Persons Unknown: The Lynching of Black America

"In the pantheon of Black women I love and admire, Mamie Till-Mobley stands tall. Throughout her memoir…she is as fearless in sharing her life story as she was when she insisted on an open-casket funeral for her beloved son, Emmett. It was wise of Till-Mobley, who died earlier this year at 81, to wait until she could see the end of her journey to tell her story….Throughout her life, Till-Mobley never tried to cash in on her son's death. Instead, she tried to find a way to make sense of it. None of us can really know her pain, but through Death of Innocence we do know her grace. Her book is a story of faith and hope -- but not blind faith and hope; rather faith and hope as action, as being worthy of the challenge."

Moving and Powerful!! The Remembrance of a Matyr
By StylishCurvyGirl
I am a 20 year old black college student that is from Clarksdale, MS. This is a little Delta town near where Emmet's murder was committed and also is mentioned in the book. The horrors described in this book are ones that every child from the Delta is aware of and is cautioned about. The men that murdered Emmett were brutal, merciless, tyrants that deserved the death penalty.
This book moved me to tears simply because of the fact that Mrs. Till never hated or wanted revenge for these men. She just wanted them to show some remorse and hoped that their little boys didn't grow up with the same kind of hatred that killed her son. This book clarified a lot of the myths that I have heard over the years about his death and also showed how strong and determined his mother was. He was her only child, the only boy, and yet she pushed and kept on fighting for him. They brought him home in a box filled with lime so he could deteriorate faster, and she said he didn't even look human, but she fought and never lost in the war of racism. She opened that box that was sealed by the state of Mississippi, and said "let the world see what I've seen". I think that this book is an eye-opener for anyone not familiar with Mississippi and for people that are, it is a raw look at the ugly truth. Mrs. Till went on to become a teacher and influenced lots of more kids with the passion that she would have given Emmett, and I thank her for this look into a heart that was wounded beyond repair and thanks to God, she made it. We made it. Emmett will never be forgotten, his story lives on still.

We Must Never Forget
By L. Allred
For everyone who has heard of Emmett Till and sworn "never again" and for those who don't believe the horrors of life for too many Blacks in the South, this book is essential. This is a mother's story of the brutal murder of her young son and the travesty of justice that followed in a rural Mississippi town in the mid-1950's. She refused to let her son's murder be hidden, and it became an early rallying point for the Civil Rights Movement. Mamie Till-Mobley moves the rock under which the roaches of racism hide and exposes them to the bright light of truth. Her words are both inspirational and disturbing. We don't want to believe that this happened fifty years ago here in the "Land of the Free", but it did. We can't even tell ourselves that it could never happen now, because she tells us of a recent and terrifyingly similar murder of a young Black male in the South. Not far from where I live, four young men have just been charged with burning a cross in the yard of a Black family who had moved into a white neighborhood. Mamie Till-Mobley had her son's casket kept open so the world could see what was done to her son. Now, her book opens the "casket" of the buried past to show us once more.
Mamie Till-Mobley was a courageous woman whose story is very moving. She talks about her youth, her family, her relationship with Emmett, the lives of Blacks in the south and in Chicago. Her story would be an important one solely because she lost a child to violence. However, her story is much, much more. She stands with other Black women of the 20th century: Marian Anderson, Rosa Parks, Coreta Scott King, the mothers of the girls killed in the church bombings.
I believe strongly that we must continue to bear witness to these events, just as we must bear witness to Hitler's atrocities, and the mass murders that continue to occur around the globe. Remembering cannot cure the ignorance and hatred that accompany prejudice, but it can help to prevent repeats of these horrific events.
As I read this book, I was reminded of an editorial written over 30 years ago by Arthur M. Sackler. Speaking of the famine in Bangladesh and other mass deaths, he said, "Tears alone are not enough." I hope that everyone who reads the words of Emmett Till's mother will realize that tears are NOT enough - we must remain attentive and work diligently to wipe this kind of hatred from the face of the earth.

"Let the world see what I've seen"
By doc peterson
Most Americans, one assumes, know who Emmitt Till was: a 14 year-old African-American boy who was murdered and brutally mutilated for allegedly whistling at a white girl in Money, Mississippi in the summer of 1955. Few know anything more about the boy or the travesty of justice that followed the trial of those accused of the murder. _Death of Innocence_ is a hard read - a reminder of our not-too-distant past, and of who we Americans are.

The book is Emmitt's story - and that of his mother - written in what I can only assume is her voice: it is plain, simple, and almost bursts with a mother's pride, love and joy for her son. This, of course, makes the reading all the more powerful and tragic reading her reaction and emotions upon learning of the death of her son. The book is also the story of the Civil Rights Movement - of what the Jim Crow south was like, of its petty indignities, the daily injustices African-Americans had to face, and of the brutal realities those who did not "play by the rules" faced. For me, these were equally powerful - too many think only of lunchcounter sit-ins, Rosa Parks and the bus boycott, or Brown v. Board (the Supreme Court decision ironically handed down the same year of Emmitt's death.) This is a reminder that it was much more about who gets to eat or sit where.

The first quarter of the book is a bit dull as Mamie Till shares the minutae and details of Emmitt's growing up; this later serves to heighten the emotional impact of her loss. The retelling Mamie gave her son before he went to Mississippi to visit family is chilling: always respond with "Ma'am" or "Sir" when speaking to a white person. Don't look white folks in the eye. When a white approaches, step off the sidewalk into the street, look down, and don't look back when they pass. Its "yes" and "no" - never "yeah" or "naw." A shock, then, when two white men, armed, literally took Emmitt from his uncle's house at 2 am. His body was later recovered from the Tallahatchee river.

The details of his burial - and Mamie's courage to give her son an open casket funeral - shocking to the rest of the world and an embarrassment to Mississippi - made for difficult reading. More outrageous was the way in which the two men who abducted Emmitt became victims in the Southern press; more appalling was the Sherriff's contention that perhaps the body recovered wasn't even Emmitt's. (Never mind it was sent to an African-American undertaker, something no white in the Jim Crow south would have done.) Most outrageous and infuriating of all was the defense of the accused: of the five attorneys in the county, all wanted to help the defendants. Both were aquitted of any wrong-doing.

In the early 21st century, we like to think we live in a "post-racial" nation. For a growing number of Americans, the Civil Rights movement is as much ancient history as the Civil War or the Crusades. However, Emmitt Till would be 61 today had he lived - maybe a retiree, perhaps a grandfather, certainly a similar age as loved ones we all know. These events were not that long ago. As uncomfortable, ugly, painful and humiliating as these injustices done to Americans by Americans were, we owe it to ourselves, to our children, and to Emmitt Till's memory to not forget them. This is a difficult read because of this. At the same time, it is a necessecary read. Recommended.
