About the Author

Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa, Curator, Zoological Museum and Institute, University of Hamburg,Steffen Harzsch, Professor of Cytology and Evolutionary Biology, Zoological Institute, University of Greifswald,Gunter Purschke, Professor of Zoology and Developmental Biology, Department of Zoology, University of Osnabruck

Andreas Schmidt-Rhaesa studied biology at the universities in Giessen and Gottingen, Germany, where he received his PhD in 1996, working on the ultrastructure and phylogeny of horsehair worms (Nematomorpha). As postdoc, he worked in Jim Garey's lab at the Duquesne University in Pittsburgh and at the University of South Florida in Tampa, USA on molecular systematics of nematomorphs. Between 1998 and 2004 he was scientific assistant in the working group of Thomas Bartolomaeus at the University of Bielefeld, where he then did a postdoc between 2004 and 2007. Since April 2007 he has been Curator for Lower Invertebrates at the Zoological Museum of the University of Hamburg. His research interests include animal morphology and systematics, with particular interest in the taxa Nematomorpha, Gastrotricha and Priapulida.

Steffen Harzsch obtained his PhD from the University of Bielefeld, Germany in 1995 working on neurogenesis in crustacean larvae at the Department of Neurobiology and in the lab of Klaus Anger at the Marine Biological Station on the island of Helgoland in the North Sea. After a postodc at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and a Heisenberg Fellowship of the German Research Foundation, he worked from 2007 to 2008 as a group leader for neuroanatomy in the Department of Evolutionary Neuroethology at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany. In 2009, he received tenure as a full Professor of Cytology and Evolutionary Biology at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald, Germany. His expertise is in studies on neurophylogeny and NeuroEvoDevo of arthropods and Chaetognatha.

Gunter Purschke, Professor at the University of Osnabrueck, Germany, is working on morphology, systematics, phylogeny and evolution of Annelida and related taxa. His research interests currently focus on evolution and diversity of photoreceptor cells and eyes, of the central nervous system and body wall musculature. He studied biology and chemistry at the University of Gottingen, and earned his PhD in Zoology in 1984. He was subsequently assistant at the University of Osnabrueck to the chair of Systematic Zoology (Prof. W. Westheide). After having received the venia legendi for Zoology (1997) he was appointed as extraordinary professor in 2002. Since 2004 he has been working with the chair of Zoology and Developmental Biology (Professor A. Paululat).

Even though this book has a different tittle than the other Monsters book that was written by the same author, it is the exact same book. I bought both at the same time and when I realized that they were the same I was disappointed, but it was a fun book to read. The list was great. It has the usual guys like Hitler, Mao, Caligula, Joseph Mengele,etc, but this book also has savages that are poorly known but are just as bad like Lavrenti Beria, Nikolai Yezhov, Godfrey of Bouillon, Baron Ungern von Sternberg, and Lothar von Trotha. Though there are a few people in here that I would not choose like Jezebel and Lucrezia Borgia (and yet her brother Cesare Borgia isn't here). There are a few guys missing like Ruhollah Khomeini, Ilse Koch, Shiro Ishii, Pedro Lopez, Albert Fish, Augusto Pinochet, and Joseph Goebbels, and Taliban leader Mullah Omar. Overall though, this is a great book on history's greatest villains.

- The information is brief but fascinating. Each villain is described in one or two pages with one or two drawings or photos. All this data can be easily found on the internet if you know these people names i.e. Ivan the Terrible. I don't know most of their names.

- I'm sure the photos and pictures here are sharper and more beautiful than the ones you can find on the Internet.

- It's worth reading. I spent 5 hours reading it in the local library.

Interesting book but find the errors in it very distracting and inexcusable. For example, Lucretia Borgia was born in 1480 and was married for the first time in 1439 (should be 1493) (p. 124) and on the same page it says she died in 1514 (should be 1519).

Thorough, with a local flavor.

I relied on this guide for my 1996 excursion to Strathcona Park, and I know I'll eventually own all three volumes of Hiking Trails.
The writing gives you a sense of the Island's personality, a feeling that it could only have been written by a local.
There are entries on almost every trail, but it's not as complete when it comes to stats such as distances and elevation gains. There's a tone of "here's the trail, eh, so go find out the rest for yourself." Still, I recommend this guide and talk about my trip on my web site ([...]

About the Author

Tim Howard is the goalkeeper for Everton in the English Premier League and the U.S. men's national team. Inspired

Some reviews are critical of the use of sports jargon in the book. To that I say this is an AUTO-biographical work written by an athlete.

As to the narrative itself, it is honest and inspirational. I've been a Tim Howard fan since his Metrostars days. I remember the pride of learning a US soccer player had been picked up by Manchester United (the New York Yankees of soccer). I watched all 15 saves in the 2014 World Cup, and doubt I will ever get over that loss. With all that said, I picked up this book mostly curious as to how Howard had suffered from and managed his Tourette's Syndrome. Simply put, I'm now more impressed with the man than the goalkeeper.

Great read. I literally couldn't put my Kindle down and now I really need to get to bed.

A beautiful blend of transparency and humility. Tim Howard's story is one for all American soccer fans- beautiful insight from his greatest struggle to his rise to fame. The best part being his honest account of his struggles with TS, his fears of failure, and his realization that his marriage had ended. What an endearing ending, which looks to be really the beginning of the best years of his life. Bravo!

Quick and easy read, and ah yes, that Belgium-USA WC game!

"The Keeper - A Life of Savings Goals and Achieving Them" (2014 publication; 318 pages) is the memoir from US soccer goalie Tim Howard, who made World Cup history last summer when he made a WC record 15 saves in that epic Round of 16 elimination match again Belgium (more on that later). Not unpredictably, the book is structured in four parts which all start off with a reflection on that game against Belgium (Pregame; Warning Shots; Nothing Gets Through; Still Alive). Otherwise it is a straight-forward, chronological memoir, from his early days in New Jersey (or "Jersey" as he calls it), rising through the ranks in the US, to then break through as a 24 yr. old in the English Premier League. Frankly, he has been at Everton for so many years that I had forgotten he actually started out his first 3 seasons in t EPL at Man United.

As to the book itself, this is very easy and quick reading. Even though it's a bit over 300 pages, I blew through this in a single afternoon recently (while having EPL games on the telly).

As to Tim's comments on the Belgium game, he says time and again "I believe that we will win", and certainly his performance isn't the reason why ultimately Team USA did not beat Belgium. Being a dual citizen of both Belgium (where I grew up) and the US (where I've lived 30+ years), you can only imagine how conflicted my feelings were about this game. In the end, the most important thing is that this was probably the most enetertaining match of last year's entire World Cup, where each team gave their all, and then some. I look forward to having Tim Howard be the goalkeeper for Team USA for a few more years, maybe even to the next WC. If you are a football fan (and you know who you are), you will enjoy this book from start to finish.

About the Author
Kathryn Cole has a long career in children’s books as an illustrator, art director, editor, designer and publisher. The books she has overseen have won multiple awards, including four Governor General’s Awards. Kathryn volunteered as a support to parents for thirteen years with BOOST in its crisis-support and court-preparation groups. She is co-managing editor at Second Story Press and lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Qin Leng was born in Shanghai, China and lived in France before moving to Montreal. She now works as a designer and illustrator in Toronto and is the illustrator of a number of award-winning children’s books.

A Great story with a great lesson.

This story by Kathryn Cole has a great message for anyone who reads or hears it. Never Give Up is about a young boy named Shaun. He is trying to learn how to ride his bike. He still has training wheels on his bike but still falls off and hurts himself. His friend Nadia is sitting on the hill watching and when some other kids start to tease him and laugh when he falls she feels intimidated and is afraid to help him. Shaun does not give up and just keeps trying. The others finally get bored and leave. Nadia goes over to Shaun to apologize because she feels like a bad friend, and he tells her not to worry about it. He says he is not giving up and eventually will learn to ride. He tells her he is good at other things because he did not give up and kept trying until he became good at whatever he tried. Nadia goes home and enlists her dad to help Shaun learn to ride and it is a great success. Nadia asks Shaun if he will help her learn how to jump in when skipping. They have so much fun that even the kids that were teasing him before join in the fun.

The message of not giving up, helping your friends and even about being a bully are great ones. The skills used to teach the lessons (riding a bike, skipping) are easily identifiable to all children. The illustrations are well done and colourful. I recommend this book to families, school libraries and classroom libraries to teach children these valuable lessons.

This is an excellent book for children. When Nadia sees her friend Shaun having trouble riding his bike. He is teased by other kids about still having the training wheels. So, Nadia enlists her dad's help to help him learn to ride. He helps Shaun learn to ride his two-wheeled bike like a pro. Then Dad and Shaun help Nadia learn to jump rope. The book ends with both kids feeling much more confident, knowing the new skills they have. It's a wonderful story about the importance of not giving up, no matter what you are trying to do. I really enjoyed this book and love the lesson it teaches. It is also so good for older kids, maybe not teenagers, but the grade school/tween age.

Fantastic book with more than one moral to it.

Never Give Up - A story about Self-Esteem is a perfect book to illustrate the power of friendship, the affect your decisions can have upon your self-esteem, and how important determination is to accomplishing something. It is set for ages 5-8 years old, and speaks perfectly for that age group. The wearing of the hijab by the main character, whilst never even mentioned in the book, subtly goes against the undercurrent of anti-Muslim rhetoric. There is nothing in this book that could have been done better. Perfectly done, with simple illustrations that let the story take the forefront whilst still adding value to the book. I highly recommend this book.

Nothing lost in translation

Translations are needed - to let us readers know what we have missed out on and what we cannot anymore. I am a champion of translations, only because I wish I could read some works in the language they were written in, but if I cannot do that, then well, a translation suffices any given day. With a book that is translated, there is so much at stake. Are all the emotions translated as well? Are words used the way they are supposed to? Is every phrase and every thought in its place? Maybe so, is punctuation to convey the correct idea? Translation is not easy business. It takes a lot from the translator - it is almost a bond needs to be there between the writer and the translator for sure. With this, I begin my review of, "Dozakhnama: Conversations in Hell" - written by Rabisankar Bal and beautifully translated by Arunava Sinha.

"Dozakhnama" proved to be is a very special read. I read it cover to cover and could not stop reading it. I managed to finish it today and here I am talking about it. The book is about two of my favourite writers conversing beyond the graves - Mirza Ghalib and Sadaat Hasan Manto. Their lives are entwined in shared dreams. The book has all elements - love, anger, hate, jealousy, magic realism (a lot of it and maybe that is one of the reasons I enjoyed the book the way I did), and covers all ground - right from Bandra to Ashok Kumar. This is what I love the most about the book - Bal doesn't hesitate to imagine and Arunava doesn't hesitate to work towards getting the emotion right for the reader in English.

The writing had me gripped from the first page and I couldn't put it down, though it was heavy in most places. While reading the book, I often wondered, how it would sound in the language it was written in. The nuances of Bengali may not have come across totally in English; however I must say the translation was packed with power and to the hilt, as it was supposed to. I will not give away the meaning behind the title, because I want other readers to explore what is there to it. At the same time, what I loved most was the couplets and quotes that kept appearing in the book since but obviously it is about two great writers.

I have yet to come across a translation as good as this one. Arunava as always does a brilliant job of translating works. Dozakhnama is a read that I will not forget for a very long time to come. In fact, if I have the time to reread it, I will do that as well. I cannot stop raving about it and with good reason.

Conversations in Hell lead to literary paradise

"Death can be endured, but memory cannot."

As the author prepares the paranormal backdrop for his narrative to spring out of graves at the very start of the book, you get biographies woven together into a single fabric that is free from all hindrances of normalcy. The nomadic narration is the soul of Dozakhnama. Stories start at one point and sprout in various stories. History and Fantasy mingle to create an unique blend of language. But then undoubtedly that's the language the two legendary literary figures Mirza Ghalib and Manto would have loved to talk to each other in.

When Mirza Ghalib and Manto who are quite apart from each other in life and death by time and distance, meet on the common ground of literature to share their experiences, the ground realities of Indian history chapters like Mughal rule, British invasion, Sepoy mutiny, Partition take shape from the point of view of a poet and a story writer who lived through those times and weren't much appreciated while they were still living.

Dozakhnama gives us tales of tortured souls told in an innovative way. Though originally written in Bengali by Rabisankar Bal and translated in English by Arunava Sinha, the effect of the original seems to have come through. I cannot know how effective the original must have been due to my language barrier but the English translation doesn't seem lost in what it wants to convey. Garnished with witty lines and Ghalib's poetry, Dozakhnama is a one of those books that you come across only once in a while. Personally I think Indian and Pakistani readers will be able to relate to Dozakhnama in a better way than readers from other countries because of the shared culture and history. Having said that Dozakhnama is still a journey worth taking.
