About the Author
Lincoln Peirce has been drawing the Big Nate comic strip for more than 20 years. Born in Ames, Iowa, Peirce grew up in Durham, New Hampshire. As a kid, he began creating his own strips in the sixth grade. Peirce taught high school in New York City and has created several animated pilots for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. He lives in Portland, Maine, with his family.

Oldies But Goodies

The "Big Nate" books follow eleven-year-old, sixth grader Nate Wright. He might not do well in school and he spends a lot of time in detention, but Nate's a bright kid. He just can't seem to keep his mouth shut and says the wrong thing. He also thinks very highly of himself. BIG NATE'S GREATEST HITS is a collection of several other Big Nate books that have been published before (BIG NATE MAKES A SPLASH, BIG NATE DIBS ON THIS CHAIR, and BIG NATE PRAY FOR A FIRE DRILL). The book finds Nate up to his usual antics including dealing with teachers, drawing his various cartoons, playing soccer, and obsessing over Cheez Doodles. Of special concern for Big Nate fans, this collection finds Nate getting his first girlfriend: Angie. It also feature Nate trying to bribe his teachers by drawing illustrations of them, helping his sister study comic books (to impress her boyfriend), and hosting his first ever boy/girl party. If you've already purchased the previous collections and are a fan of Big Nate, then you really don't need this book. However, if you don't own those other volumes or are new to "Big Nate", then BIG NATE'S GREATEST HITS is a good place to start.

Contains previous collections, but for new fans this is a great way to meet Big Nate

'Big Nate's Greatest Hits' by Lincoln Peirce asks the question "Can you ever get enough Big Nate?" Thankfully, the answer is a resounding "No!"

Weighing in at 376 pages, this collection is huge. It does collect three other Big Nate books ('Big Nate Makes a Splash,' 'Big Nate Dibs on This Chair,' and 'Big Nate Pray for a Fire Drill'), so do take note of that.

Nate Wright is 11 and lives with his single dad and older sister. He likes playing sports, is good at cartooning, but is not the brightest kid in school. We see his struggles with girls, his nemesis teacher, his older sister, all of which seem to be instigated by Nate. Throughout the book are cartoons by "Nate" which feature his characters like Doctor Cesspool, Dan Cupid and Hollywood stuntman Moe Mentum. He also draws cartoons featuring Abe Lincoln and Pablo Picasso. He's obsessed with Cheeze Doodles, the new girl in town, and trying to get away with not turning in assignments.

I loved collections like this when I was a kid, and I still do as long as the comics are funny, and these are. This takes me back to all those collections of Peanuts, Garfield, and Nancy and Sluggo I remember reading. The dailies are in black and white, but the Sundays are in color. All are presented one strip per page, so this represents over a year's worth. I had a great time reading this.

Couldn't put it down!

I am a fan of Big Nate, and I was excited to find out it was combined with all the other books. However, about 25 percent of the book had parts I had seen before in previous books, and I was disappointed that the author had not come up with any new things to write about. Excluding that, the book was excellent!

About the Author
Alexander Strauch was raised in New Jersey and converted to Christ at a Bible camp in New York State. He received his undergraduate degree from Colorado Christian University and went on to earn his Master's in Divinity degree from Denver Seminary. For over thirty years he has served as an elder at Littleton Bible Chapel near Denver, Colorado. Additionally, he has taught philosophy and New Testament literature at Colorado Christian University. A Complete Discussion of Biblical Eldership in one volumne

Alexander Strauch gives us a complete Biblical Overview and explanation of what it means to be an Elder in the Christian Church. In four different sections he addresses everything you may be wondering about being an Elder or how church polity ought to function in today's culture. The four sections are;

Part One: Biblical Eldership
Part Two: Defense of Biblical Eldership
Part Three: The Exposition of Scripture
Part Four: Related Topics:

Part One deals with five chapters that give us an overview of what an Elder should be, the character qualifications, the gender issue and the style of leadership. I especially appreciated chapter 4 which dealt with whether someone is "Qualified" to be in leadership. I think that the church today doesn't always do a good job of preparing someone to be an Elder nor do they interview men well in regards to their qualifications. Often we use the wrong set of standards and ask the wrong questions. So, I found this chapter especially well done.

The chapter on "Male Leadership" will be one that some find confrontational or misinformed. But for the general populace of conservative Evangelical Congregations they will find his treatment of this chapter as well done.

Part Three deals with an Exposition of the different scriptures that deal with Leadership in the New Testament Church. This information is well done and is the foundation for his thoughts in Part One of the book. So you get another reading of the Characteristics of Leadership with a strong Biblical background by going through a commentary on the different scriptural passages.

Overall the book is well thought out, well documented and easy to follow the flow.

If your church is looking for a text that will give you guidance on the office of Elder for your church this is one text that you will want in your library to help you formulate your job description and the leaders' qualifications.

Do you care more about government structure or church structure?

"I doubt that many evangelical leaders would say `It doesn't matter how the U.S. government is structured as long as there is some form of leadership.' Yet, that is precisely what I have heard some evangelical leaders say." (102)

The fact is, many people in the church today do not think about church leadership. As long as something is in place, as long as the church is headed in the right direction, that is good enough. Alexander Strauch has written Biblical Eldership to reveal the truth about church leadership, plainly revealed in God's Word.

Part One defines what Biblical eldership is. "According to the New Testament concept of eldership, elders lead the church, teach and preach the Word, protect the church from false teachers, exhort and admonish the saints in sound doctrine, visit the sick and pray, and judge doctrinal issues. In biblical terminology, elders shepherd, oversee, lead, and care for the local church." (16)

Strauch covers Pastoral Leadership, Shared Leadership, Male Leadership, Qualified Leadership, and Servant Leadership each in a separate chapter. Each chapter is thorough, easy to read, and back up with scripture references throughout.

Part Two is a defense of Biblical Eldership. The average church member is not interested in the leadership structure in the church, but it is hugely important. As Strauch says, the structure of church government will help determine how people think and act in the church. In my experience, people just don't want to talk about eldership for one reason or another, choosing to focus on the "more important" issues. However, "the New Testament offers more instruction regarding elders than on other important church subjects such as the Lord's Supper, the Lord's Day, baptism, or the spiritual gifts." (103)

Obviously, eldership is hugely important in Scripture and needs to be carefully considered by every local church.

Part Three serves as the exposition of Scripture on eldership. It essentially covers the same material as Parts One and Two, but expositionally instead of topically.

Part Four includes two short chapters, one on the appointment of elders and one on the relationship with elders and their congregation.

Biblical Eldership is a great book that covers an underserved area of theology and should serve as an example for other Christian authors who want to cover church topics. It is Biblical, thorough, and well written. Highly recommended for all readers interested in Biblical leadership in the church.

Excellent, fully-developed book on Biblical Eldership

As Strauch says in this book, he wrote it because no full book had been written on Biblical Eldership. Well, thanks to Strauch, we now have one and it is excellent! The book starts with some passionate, Biblically sound, and powerful chapters on various aspects of church eldership (e.g., Shared Leadership, Servant Leadership) and then moves to specific Scriptural exposition chapters on key texts like Acts, I Timothy, Titus, and others that you might not even associate with eldership like Philippians 1.

The book is intentionally light on application (and thus the accompanying study guide), but Strauch consistently demonstrates a comprehensive grasp of Scripture which he obviously obtained throughout his first-hand experience of being a church elder and the work of the Holy Spirit in his life.

My only complaint about the book is that, though usually even-handed, Strauch sometimes forces his readers to take his side on debatable issues with words like "clearly," "extremely," and other slight exaggerations unfortunately common to many Christian teachers. But as I said, he is usually even-handed and convincing and the book is still most definitely a 5/5.

If you or your church are looking to establish and eldership or bring an existing eldership into greater conformity to Scripture and effectiveness for Jesus, I highly recommend this book!

As a consultant, I am frequently hired by manufacturing companies to help them solve chronic quality problems. After working on many such projects, I realized we went through a fairly similar sequence of steps to zero in on the major cause of process variation. I began writing down these steps, refining them over the years until they evolved into the DOT*STAR problem-solving strategy that is featured in my latest book.

Although there are many strategies available for resolving a wide variety of problems, the DOT*STAR strategy is specifically designed for solving chronic quality problems in manufacturing, primarily for processes involving machining, fabrication, and assembly. I believe this focus on a certain area is one of the reasons why this approach is so very effective, yet easy to apply, even for small to medium sized companies. You will discover this strategy is not just a collection of statistical tools, but a structured set of operating instructions detailing how to systematically apply these tools in the correct sequence, and at the proper time, to help you uncover a major source of process variation.

Because this book was written for those who must resolve quality problems on the shop floor, I limited the statistical techniques presented in the book to those that are easy to understand. Thus, an extensive knowledge of statistics is not required to successfully apply them. Simply astonishing in scope and depth

As a long time proponent practitioner of statistical process controls (SPC) and process improvement I was astonished by what I didn't know after reading this set. The most significant revelation, and why this book is an essential resource for anyone involved with quality or process improvement, is the DOT*STAR process that drills down into causes.
DOT*STAR stands for Define [the problem], Observe [the process], Think [of possible causes], Select [the most probable cause], Test [to validate your assumptions], Act, Review and Revise. The approach is straightforward in concept, but in practice it employs an array of tools and techniques, all of which are common in quality improvement (statistical techniques such as histograms and Pareto charts, paired-comparisons, hypothesis testing and project management tools for implementation).
I like the way the book presents a coherent approach to applying familiar [to practitioners] tools and techniques to identify and eliminate root causes of process variation. Therein lies the true value of this material - it shows you how to leverage your existing quality and process improvement knowledge and skills to their fullest potential, and along the way gain a deeper understanding of SPC, process capability, and how to perform effective investigation and analysis to bring about process improvement.
If you're involved in quality, process improvement or 6-Sigma this book is essential reading because it provides insights that and an approach that works in practice.

This collection of twelve essays is the most recent achievement of ongoing studies of performances by singers of tales and ritualists in contemporary socio-cultural contexts by means of pioneering initiatives in the Digital Humanities, multiple analytical approaches and expert use of our growing technical capacity to safeguard and explore Intangible Heritage.

Nicole Revel, Emeritus Research Director, CNRS, Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN), Paris, France and Doctor honoris causa in Humanities, Ateneo de Manila University, is a linguist-anthropologist working on 'literature of the voice', verbal arts, the performing arts and local knowledge about nature with the Palawan. She has conducted extensive fieldwork on endangered languages and artistic expressions in collaboration with various cultural communities in the Philippines and Nusantara since 1991 in order to build this collection and digitized archive.
