Small Treasures (a sexy Western romantic comedy), by Maureen Child

Plucky seamstress Abby Sutton had traveled across the untamed West to the one-room cabin she had inherited. She refused to give up her only home simply because a gruff mountain man claimed he had bought it before her uncle died. No, she would stay put and let the traveling judge decide who rightfully owned the place. Anything could happen in the five weeks before the judge made his way back to town.

Samuel Hart knew he could easily eject the feisty brunette – after all, she was a tiny thing, and he was so big, he scared the local townsfolk. But he couldn’t bring himself to turn a defenseless woman out in the cold … even when she took over his masculine domain with cleaning and laughing and singing and painting the place pink, for godsake.

He had grown used to seeing fear in women’s eyes, but try as he might, the only thing Samuel saw in Abby’s eyes was affection… and the hint of something deeper, something that made him yearn for the life he had never allowed himself to want.

Loved it and Want More!
By Patsy Kennard
This book is a heartwarming, funny historical set in the mountains of the Old West. Abby is adorable you can't help but love her, misguided as her sense of style may be lol. Samuel is so big and gruff you just want to hug like your favorite teddy bear. Poor Sam is doomed to fall for Abby and her charms...whether he wants to or not. Sam is a big bear of a man with a low self-esteem that just wants to live his quiet, lonely life in peace. Then Abby comes along and ruins that. Then along comes Luke to make things even more interesting and heart tugging. Abby and Luke make poor Sam want to tug his hair out, blow his top, head for the hills, protect them, love them and keep them forever. If only he can. The nearby town residence make this an even better story that you can see unfolding in your mind as you continue to read. The result is a funny, heartwarming story that is hard to put down and makes you want more. I am a great fan of this book and others by Maureen Child and glad this was re-released. As always will be looking for the next book.

Great story, poor editing
By Eddie Charlett-Green
Like the other reviewers I really enjoyed the story. It lost a star because of the typographical errors strewn throughout the book, things like 'per form' for perform, 'pleas ant' for pleasant, 'combat ants' for combatants. A spell checker will not pick up these errors, as each part of the word can stand alone! The best one was 'ordecidetoridehundredsofnules' which I can only think should be 'or decide to ride hundreds of miles'. I found these errors a distraction.

A Hoot! Samuel the lonely giant finds family
By Joy-read
I read this historical romance a few months ago. Loved it. Laughed out loud several times. But it was also poignant -- because Samuel Hart is HUGE and the whole town is scared to death of him. He has no friends. He is lonely. His mamma warned him when he was just a child that he should stay away from people, cuz he might accidentally hurt them.

Then comes Abby Sutton, a small but bossy woman with a big heart (hiding a fear of homelessness) and a dreadful taste in clothing and home decor (some funny scenes there). Abby claims that her uncle left her Samuel's house and land. In fact, he sold it to Samuel before he died, so her inheritance was nullified. Abby forecefully moves in with Samuel until the judge can sort it all out. Soon enough, she enlarges Samuel's lonely life even more by bringing home a vagrant boy, Luke. Then she starts bringing townsfolk home. Now Samuel has lots of love and laughter in his life. Pretty soon his big old bed starts rocking. ;-)

An enjoyable read! Lots of laughs -- I loved the interactions with Luke, who didn't want to wear the sissy clothing Abby sewed for him. And Samuel, who didn't want to hurt her feelings, yet abhorred her taste in paint color. Also, some sizzling sex, and some enjoyable and well-defined seconday characters. The relationship developed fairly quickly but not too fast -- Sam and Abby went from being reluctant housemates, to friendship, to sexual intimacy and trust.

Flaws: Formatting problems. For example, words are broken up, like this: plat form, per form, plea sant (etc.)
Also, I did not care for a scene towards the end, involving a BIG misunderstanding. But the story closed with a nice epilogue.

Content Caution: Some mild violence, mainly fist fighting; some sex scenes; regrettably, a few religious swear words.

A very brief summary
By Doug Erlandson
It has been more than half a century since Kenneth Scott LaTourette finished his seven-volume work "The History of the Expansion of Christianity." That there is so much to say about the history of Christian missions means that any attempt to write a "concise history" of two millennia of spreading the Gospel throughout the world is going to be most difficult. Much of the story will be left untold. All in all, J. Herbert Kane has done a good job of distilling the essentials. As such, it is a worthwhile purchase for the person who presently knows little to nothing about the history of missions.

However, while acknowledging the difficulty of Kane's task, there are still some problems that must be pointed out. First and foremost is the matter of balance. Kane devotes just 47 pages (of the nearly 200 pages of text) to the first 1200 years of church history. As a result, much of the fascinating story of the Christianization of Europe during this time is either summarized with too great brevity or missing entirely. Furthermore, a greater emphasis on the Catholic mission to East Asia, particularly Japan and China, in the late 1500s and 1600s, is needed. This is a most fascinating story, one that has ramifications today for the debate over contextualization of the Gospel. Kane devotes a woefully inadequate two pages to this story.

Despite these problems I must applaud Kane's attempt to give this overview, for an appreciation of even the basics of the history of Christianity in general and the history of its mission is absent among so many Christians today.

Best Summary of Mission History Ever Written!
By A Customer
This is one of the finest works on the history of missions ever to come out of the evangelical community. It is filled not only with the facts, but with the passion and sensitivity that could only have come from a seasoned missionary veteran.

This is an excellent summary of the history of missions
By Richard M. Duffy
This is an excellent summary of the history of missions. The only drawback is that it is dated when it refers to present numbers of Hindus, Muslims total population etc. If these parts could be revised to reflect the present situation, then the book would be even more useful.

Riveting psychological thriller
By barry
This book had me mezmerized. For nights on end I stayed up way past my bed time unable to put it down. This book looked intriguing but that is certainly an understatement. Kitty Sewell has certainly arrived with BLOODPRINT and stands up there with the best writers of psychological fiction.

The book started a little slow for me and then it kicked into gear and never let up. This is one of those stories where giving away more than a little will ruin the shocks and surprises for other readers so I will be brief on that. The novel is a story of two women - Madelaine Frank and Rachel Locklear - whose lives become intertwined at random and then there are unique similarities that bond these very different women. The book starts dramatically with Madelaine loosing her husband to a hurricane in Key West and moving to Bath where she has become a therapist. Rachel has a very troubled marriage and is abused by her husband. She comes to see Madelaine for help in removing herself from her husband for the sake of her son.

These two women are more than believable. They are very rich three dimensional characters with secrets and depth that creates great psychological suspense. All the other characters in each of their lives are just as real. This book will grab you as you care about these characters and are enthalled by the plotline. The author also does the difficult task of making Key West and Bath so real and descriptive that they become characters in their own right. This book also encompasses Cuban sorcery, prostitution, street life, a relationship with a convicted killer and murder. All is believable. This novel would have succeeded had it merely been a psychological profile of these two women and their lives but it goes even further and becomes a full fledged A++ thriller. You will be at the edge of your seat and quickly turning each page with anticipation.

There is much pop fiction in this genre out there. This is in no way pop fiction. Kitty Sewell is a gifted author and this piece of literature rises a level above the genre. Often with these novels the endings can seem a lttle convoluted but here everything rings true. The story here is very complex and very well crafted. There is no disbelief as the story unfolds. If you a a fan of psychological suspense this book is a must for you. So unique and following no standard formula this story with all its sorcery and magic included will enthrall you.

Kitty Sewell is now on my list of favorite authors.

ENTERTAINING AND ENGROSSING
By ReadyForTrouble
Ms. Sewell has captured her characters on paper with expertise. The story blends the concept of "Santeria" or ritual magic, mental illness and domestic violence with the practicalities of everyday life in such a way as the reader remains `in' the story to the very end. Highly recommended.

Psychological Suspense
By Terry South
Madeline Frank is a psychotherapist who lives in London but yearns for her native America. Madeline lived the majority of her life in Key West Florida but after the death of her husband she decided to return to London where her parents both lived,of course they are divorced, which is common now days. Madeline's mother is very eccentric, she is what people call a "witchy woman"- but in her homeland she is referred to as a "Santeria". Madeline's father is a well known artist whose paintings have earned him great wealth. Madeline's mother is now in an institution,we call it a nursing home, she has long since lost her ability to function on her own. Madeline must face the secrets of her past which are now haunting her, she must also deal with her patients' ,one of which is an imprisoned murderer, another which is somehow familiar yet distant from her. As she deals with her life, her Mothers care and continued loss she must also find the one thing she gave up many years ago,her daughter. Madeline's life is intertwined with with her patients much more than she is aware of.This book would make a really good movie. I enjoyed reading this book although it took me a little while to get caught up in it. There was a few surprises between the pages. Even Madelines poor decrepit mother is full of surprises.

Helmet for My Pillow: From Parris Island to the Pacific, by Robert Leckie

Here is one of the most riveting first-person accounts ever to come out of World War II. Robert Leckie enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1942, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. In Helmet for My Pillow we follow his odyssey, from basic training on Parris Island, South Carolina, all the way to the raging battles in the Pacific, where some of the war’s fiercest fighting took place. Recounting his service with the 1st Marine Division and the brutal action on Guadalcanal, New Britain, and Peleliu, Leckie spares no detail of the horrors and sacrifices of war, painting an unvarnished portrait of how real warriors are made, fight, and often die in the defense of their country.

From the live-for-today rowdiness of marines on leave to the terrors of jungle warfare against an enemy determined to fight to the last man, Leckie describes what war is really like when victory can only be measured inch by bloody inch. Woven throughout are Leckie’s hard-won, eloquent, and thoroughly unsentimental meditations on the meaning of war and why we fight. Review
“Helmet for My Pillow is a grand and epic prose poem. Robert Leckie’s theme is the purely human experience of war in the Pacific, written in the graceful imagery of a human being who—somehow—survived.”—Tom Hanks

“One hell of a book! The real stuff that proves the U.S. Marines are the greatest fighting men on earth!”—Leon Uris, author of Battle Cry

About the Author
Robert Leckie was the author of more than thirty works of military history as well as Marines, a collection of short stories, and Lord, What a Family!, a memoir. Raised in Rutherford, New Jersey, he started writing professionally at age sixteen, covering sports for The Bergen Evening Record of Hackensack. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on the day following the attack on Pearl Harbor, going on to serve as a machine gunner and as an intelligence scout and participating in all 1st Marine Division campaigns except Okinawa. Leckie was awarded five battle stars, the Naval Commendation Medal with Combat V, and the Purple Heart. Helmet for My Pillow (Random House, 1957) was his first book; it received the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association award upon publication.

Chapter One

Boot

A cutting wind slanted up Church Street in the cheerless dawn of January 5, 1942. That day I departed for the United States Marines.

The war with Japan was not yet four weeks old, Wake Island had fallen. Pearl Harbor was a real tragedy, a burning bitter humiliation. Hastily composed war songs were on the lips of everyone, their heavy patriotism failing to compensate for what they lacked in tune and spirit. Hysteria seemed to crouch behind all eyes.

But none of this meant much to me. I was aware of my father beside me, bending into the wind with me. I could feel the wound in my lower regions, still fresh, still sore. The sutures had been removed a few days earlier.

I had sought to enlist the day after Pearl Harbor, but the Marines had insisted that I be circumcised. It cost me a hundred dollars, although I am not sure to this day whether I paid the doctor or not. But I am certain that few young men went off to war in that fateful time so marked.

We had come across the Jersey meadows, riding the Erie commuter line, and then on the ferry over the Hudson River to downtown New York. Breakfast at home had been subdued. My mother was up and about; she did not cry. It was not a heart-rending leave-taking, nor was it brave, resolute—any of those words that fail to describe the thing.

It was like so much else in this war that was to produce unbounded heroism, yet not a single stirring song: it was resigned. She followed me to the door with sad eyes and said, “God keep you.”

It had been a silent trip across the meadows and it was a wordless good-by in front of the bronze revolving doors at Ninety, Church Street. My father embraced me quickly, and just as quickly averted his face and left. The Irish doorman measured me and smiled.

I went inside and joined the United States Marines.

The captain who swore us in reduced the ceremony to a jumble. We all held up our hands. We put them down when he lowered his. That way we guessed we were marines.

The master gunnery sergeant who became our momentary shepherd made the fact plainer to us. Those rich mellow blasphemous oaths that were to become so familiar to me flowed from his lips with the consummate ease of one who had spent a lifetime in vituperation. I would meet his masters later. Presently, as he herded us across the river to Hoboken and a waiting train, he seemed to be beyond comparison. But he was gentle and kind enough when he said good-by to the thirty or forty of us who boarded the train.

He stood at the head of our railroad car—a man of middle age, slender, and of a grace that was on the verge of being ruined by a pot belly. He wore the Marine dress blues. Over this was the regulation tight-fitting overcoat of forest green. Green and blue has always seemed to me an odd combination of colors, and it seemed especially so then; the gaudy dark and light blue of the Marine dress sheathed in sedate and soothing green.

“Where you are going it will not be easy,” the gunnery sergeant said. “When you get to Parris Island, you’ll find things plenty different from civilian life. You won’t like it! You’ll think they’re overdoing things. You’ll think they’re stupid! You’ll think they’re the cruelest, rottenest bunch of men you ever ran into! I’m going to tell you one thing. You’ll be wrong! If you want to save yourself plenty of heartache you’ll listen to me right now: you’ll do everything they tell you and you’ll keep your big mouths shut!”

He could not help grinning at the end. No group of men ever had a saner counselor, and he knew it; but he could not help grinning. He knew we would ignore his every word.

“Okay, Sarge,” somebody yelled. “Thanks, Sarge.”

He turned and left us.

We called him “Sarge.” Within another twenty-four hours we would not dare address a lowly Pfc. without the cringing “sir.” But today the civilian shine was still upon us. We wore civvies; Hoboken howled around us in the throes of trade; we each had the citizen’s polite deprecation of the soldier, and who among us was not certain that he was not long for the ranks?

Our ride to Washington was silent and uneventful. But once we had arrived in the capital and had changed trains the atmosphere seemed to lift. Other Marine recruits were arriving from all over the east. Our contingent was the last to arrive, the last to be crammed aboard the ancient wooden train that waited, puffing, dirty-in-the-dark, smelling of coal—waited to take us down the coast to South Carolina. Perhaps it was because of the dilapidated old train that we brightened and became gay. Such a dingy, tired old relic could not help but provoke mirth. Someone pretended to have found a brass plate beneath one of the seats, and our car rocked with laughter as he read, “This car is the property of the Philadelphia Museum of American History.” We had light from kerosene lamps and heat from a potbellied stove. Draughts seemed to stream from every angle and there was a constant creaking and wailing of wood and wheels that sounded like an endless keening. Strange old train that it was, I loved it.

Comfort had been left behind in Washington. Some of us already were beginning to revel in the hardship of the train ride. That intangible mystique of the marine was somehow, even then, at work. We were having it rough, which is exactly what we expected and what we had signed up for. That is the thing: having it rough. The man who has had it roughest is the man to be most admired. Conversely, he who has had it the easiest is the least praiseworthy.

Those who wished to sleep could cat-nap on the floor while the train lurched down through Virginia and North Carolina. But these were few. The singing and the talk were too exciting.

The boy sitting next to me—a handsome blond-haired youth from south Jersey—turned out to have a fine high voice. He sang several songs alone. There being a liberal leavening of New York Irish among us, he was soon singing Irish ballads.

Across the aisle there was another boy, whom I shall call Armadillo because of his lean and pointed face. He was from New York and had attended college there. Being one of the few college men present, he had already established a sort of literary clique.

The Armadillo’s coterie could not equal another circle farther down the car. This had at its center a stocky, smiling redhead. Red had been a catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals and had once hit a home run at the Polo Grounds off the great Carl Hubbell.

There was no measuring the impact of such a celebrity on our group, composed otherwise of mediocrities like myself. Red had been in the big time. He had held daily converse with men who were nothing less than the idols of his newfound comrades. It was quite natural they should ring him round; consult him on everything from pitching form to the Japanese General Staff.

“Whaddya think it’ll be like at Parris Island, Red?”

“Hey, Red—you think the Japs are as tough as the newspapers say they are?”

It is an American weakness. The success becomes the sage. Scientists counsel on civil liberty; comedians and actresses lead political rallies; athletes tell us what brand of cigarette to smoke. But the redhead was equal to it. It was plain in his case what travel and headlines can do. He was easily the most poised of us all.

But I suspect even Red’s savoir-faire got a rude jolt when we arrived in Parris Island. We had been taken from the railroad station by truck. When we had dismounted and had formed a motley rank in front of the red brick mess hall, we were subjected to the classic greeting.

“Boys,” said the sergeant who would be our drill instructor. “Boys—Ah want to tell yawl something. Give youah hearts to Jesus, boys—cause youah ass belongs to me!”

Then he fell us in after our clumsy civilian fashion and marched us into the mess hall.

There were baloney and lima beans. I had never eaten lima beans before, but I did this time; they were cold.

The group that had made the trip from New York did not survive the first day in Parris Island. I never saw the blond singer again, nor most of the others. Somehow sixty of us among the hundreds who had been aboard that ancient train, became a training platoon, were assigned a number and placed under the charge of the drill sergeant who had delivered the welcoming address.

Sergeant Bellow was a southerner with a fine contempt for northerners. It was not that he favored the southerners; he merely treated them less sarcastically. He was big. I would say six feet four inches, two hundred thirty pounds.

But above all he had a voice.

It pulsed with power as he counted the cadence, marching us from the administration building to the quartermaster’s. It whipped us, this ragged remnant, and stiffened our slouching civilian backs. Nowhere else but in the Marine Corps do you hear that peculiar lilting cadence of command.

“Thrip-faw-ya-leahft, thrip-faw-ya-leahft.”

It sounds like an incantation; but it is merely the traditional “three-four-your-left” elongated by the southern drawl, made sprightly by being sung. I never heard it done better than by our sergeant. Because of this, and because of his inordinate love of drill, I have but one image of him: striding stiff-backed a few feet apart from us, arms thrust out, hands clenched, head canted back, with the whole body following and the great voice ceaselessly bellowing, “Thrip-faw-ya-leahft, thrip-faw-ya-leahft.”

Sergeant Bellow marched us to the quartermaster’s. It was there we were stripped of all vestiges of personality. It is the quartermasters who make soldiers, sailors and marines. In their presence, one strips down. With each divestment, a trait is lost; the discard of a garment marks the quiet death of an idiosyncrasy. I take off my socks; gone is a propensity for stripes, or clocks, or checks, or even solids; ended is a tendency to combine purple socks with brown tie. My socks henceforth will be tan. They will neither be soiled, nor rolled, nor gaudy, nor restrained, nor holey. They will be tan. The only other thing they may be is clean.

So it is with it all, until one stands naked, struggling with an embarrassment that is entirely lost on the laconic shades who work in quartermaster sheds.

Within—in the depths the psychiatrists call subliminal—a human spark still sputters. It will never go quite out. Its vigor or its desuetude is in exact proportion to the number of miles a man may put between himself and his camp.

Profound and unique insight into the WWII Pacific experience
By Lori D. Smith
First, I must admit a particular regard for this book as the granddaughter of Bill Smith (whom Leckie refers to as 'Hoosier'), who served with Leckie in How Company. Leckie offers nuanced insight into the ways in which he and his friends understood national military service, the `enemy', and the war more generally, and how these perspectives or ideas evolved among the men from North Carolina to Guadalcanal, Australia, and New Britain. Leckie steers clear from prototypes or cliches; there is no enblematic enlisted man or officer. Rather, these men are treated as real people coping (or not) with the profound uncertainty of their situation.

Perhaps this appreciation says more about my own lack of experience with combat/warfare. Thinking of Guadalcanal from a macro or military history perspective, it is easy to take for granted that marines' objectives - and the most efficacious means to pursue them - were always apparent to those involved. In this context, Leckie's account of warfare as a learning process was deep, reflexive, and fascinating. For example, he describes: 1) the marines' first reactions to air battle and subsequent adjustment to air battle as a simple process of attrition; and 2) the uncertainty confronted by officers at various stages, against the backdrop of the US' limited military experience in the Pacific or in jungles more generally. In this way, Leckie also makes apparent the need - and efficacy - of severe hierarchy. For this reason, I think that reviewers' arguments positing a lack of regard for officers deserve qualification.

***UPDATE/REFLECTIONS***
Hoosier was wounded and evacuated early in the Battle of Peleliu; I believe that Chuckler and Runner were wounded later and evacuated with Leckie. Leckie and his friends stayed in touch - in the summer of 1985, my grandfather and his wife, as well as Runner (Juergens) and his wife, went to visit Leckie in New Jersey. There Leckie decidated a park in their honor, in honor of all marines who fought in the Pacific Theater (I uploaded a photo of the dedication plaque in the 'customer image gallery').

Although Hoosier never liked to share his experiences from the war, my father considers the book to be true to his character. And, while the HBO miniseries diverges considerably from the book, Hoosier's sense of humor appears true to form (the book provides far greater nuance and depth, different dialogue, and events unfolded differently). This edition of the book also includes a few photographs of Leckie, Runner, Hoosier, and others - some taken in their dress blues, and others on Guadalcanal.

That was victory

`Helmet for My Pillow" is a reissue from 1957. My one and only complaint is my usual one with reissues...please put in an updated introduction...tell us what has happened with the author or life, don't just reissue it and do nothing else. This will be made into a mini series which is probably the reason for the reissue. No matter what the reason it's definitely worth reading. Robert Leckie's descriptions create a picture; from his drill sergeant..." but above all he had a voice" to the exultation of leave in Australian after the battle of Guadalcanal. There are black and white pictures throughout the pages of the men he served with and of Leckie which definitely helps with the mind's pictures.

But most of all this book is remarkable. I have heard men describe their experiences with jungle warfare, both from WWII and Vietnam, but never with the awful clarity that is done in these pages. I grew up in the army and have been with the military all of my life and can agree with so much of what is said here, and said with far more ability than almost any other book I have read.
Leakie pulls no punches, not in the way many of the enlisted were treated by their officers or in his own `mistakes' that landed in him the brig.
Historically there is much in here that I have never read before, and I have read and listened to much. There are stories of the hunger the fighting men felt during battle and how Japanese forces would try to sneak into their camps at night for food. Then there are the descriptions of the `widow makers', trees that were weakened by artillery fire that killed 25 men as they broke and fell on them.
This is truly an incredible account, eye opening and worthy of your time and effort to read.

Absolutely spellbinding. Couldn't put it down.
By R. KELSEY
One of the best personal memoirs of war I have ever read. Leckie is brutally honest about anything and everything to do with his experiences in the 1st Marine Division during WWII. Incredibly impressed by his sensitive candor and philosophical reflections on the impact of war on human beings. Having been an officer myself, I was truly shocked to read his descriptions of Marine officers blatantly stealing from enlisted men. I guess in wartime, they were willing to let anyone become an officer. Leckie pulls no punches but shows remarkable understanding, forgiveness, and mercy towards all his comrades and even the enemy. This book is a classic and a must-read for anyone interested in what combat in the Pacific theater was really like and about young men's reaction to war. Rest in peace, Robert Leckie. For those who fell, there is no hell. I thank God knowing you have been reunited with your comrades. Thank you for writing this book. It was a privilege to have read it. A great gift to those who have never known the horrors and sacrifice of war.

Didn't think the book would have such a eye opening experience. I'm that type of mom that feels guilty for having to cook and clean while her kid played by herself. In this book it opens your eyes to not feeling guilty of letting your kid be bored. How they learn more when they're on their down time retaining all the information they've learned. That some people have a schedule and for some that doesn't work and it's all okay. How we mold our kids in the first years by not just teaching them, but by love and compassion too.

Really works.
By sun2008
I'm writing this review five years after buying the book. Back then, we hadn't even thought about getting pregnant - but I'm somewhat of an intense planner and wanted to make sure we were really prepared. I read the entire book, enjoyed it immensely, then filed it away. In 2010 we were pregnant, and I reread the book in the hopes of refreshing my memory before our baby's arrival.

Fast forward two years, and our child is by far the most verbal (articulate, not just vocal), has the largest vocabulary, the longest attention span and ability to focus amongst his similar age peers, and is one of the most well adjusted children we have seen. I feel compelled to write this review because I truly believe this book has greatly helped us in enhancing his development.

Good read, prepare for heavy bookmarking
By David Taitelbaum
Bright from the Start is a solid overview on early childhood education. I would not hestitate to recommend reading this book. I have a 20 month old daughter and am using some of the techniques the authors recommend. My one quibble is the information would be more beneficial if it was outlined based on age. There are age-related suggestions within each chapter, however this resulted in me creating a bunch of bookmarks I will need to sort through in order to get the most out of the book. Even with that being the case, there is lots of really great information here that is backed up by research.

Perfect Collection of Photographs
By A Customer
I have pruchased this book in 1996 and have enjoyed every single page. If you are a seaman and are fond of old steam ships, which are becoming rare museum pieces, this is the perfect book to have alook at them. Especially the Imperial Yachts of the Sultans, their graceful lines and splendor are noteworthy. I have met the authors and thanked them personally for their outstanding work and I would like to repeat my thanks to them here once again.

A genuine piece of Turkish Delight - savour it!
By Donal A. O'Neill
This book is an absolute delight, opening up a vista into a long-gone world when Turkey hovered on the brink of embracing modernity but, in those pre-Ataturk days, never gathered the courage for the final plunge. The numerous high-quality photographs are as valuable for the picture they give of a vanished society as for the technical content. Grave moustachioed and befezzed officers and smart-looking seamen look at the camera across immaculately holystoned decks, obviously proud of their custodianship of the products of British, German and French shipyards and armaments workshops - images which are in many cases at sharp variance with the actuality of venality, corruption and inefficiency that governed their daily lives (The story in the text of Ottoman seamen stranded at a German shipyard, and practically destitute, as the funds do not become available to pay for the refurbishment of their ship, is especially pathetic). Those who love Turkey and the Turks will enjoy these photographs even if they have little interest in naval history - the views of ports, shipyards and the Golden Horn are quite splendid. The book is in fact in three main sections - an introductory text, a superb collection of photographs and a technical appendix that provides not just specifications and brief histories of every ship to serve in the Ottoman navy in the period covered, but also excellent general arrangement drawings and hull lines for many of them. This book is one that is to be treasured by anybody with an interest in naval matters of the ironclad and pre-World War 1 age. I have enjoyed it since I have purchased it and will regard it as a source of valuable reference and entertainment for years to come. Buy it!

Brief history, lots of pictures, and powerful images
By A Customer
Although not enough commentary on the pictures abundant in this book, the rare collections themselves are stunning and spoke directly to you of a once mighty Utsmani Devlet. You have to focus hard and connect the scattered pieces of facts in order to make some arguments from this remarkable work.
To get the best out of this book you'll need to read a few introductory works on the Utsmani period of modern navy, plus some history on the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, Western Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. Yes, surprisingly, they actually controlled much of those waters then.

Being Tribal, by Shereen Ratnagar

As an archaeologist Shereen Ratnagar has been long involved in studying the enigma of early kin-organized, small-scale and non-specialized societies which lack private landed-property and are free of a money economy; societies that we call tribal. Having conducted ethno-archaeological research amongst the tribal people in eastern Gujarat, she spent a few months living with them to investigate how, in spite of their miniscule land holdings, they are able to raise cash crops, year after year. Far from being abject or 'primitive', tribal people schedule their subsistence in a rational way, which is diversified in more ways that one, and families are self-sufficient to a considerable extent. That households think years ahead, is also abundantly clear from their provisions for the storage of food. Being Tribal attempts to define tribal society, traces tribal migrations in history, and examines their modes of agricultural production, This book also comes to the conclusion that tribal culture is robust, and that Indian society owes it to the tribal population--repeatedly displaced and marginalized in the interests of the powerful--to give them full scope to live out their destinies in their own way.

A Sweet Romance with Real Angst
By Dawnofday
The problems facing Ryan and Dante feel very much like real ones, not the usual tripe thrown into romances. Ryan is recovering from a horrible skating accident and seriously unsure if he will ever walk again. Dante faces daily harassment for his sexuality, harassment from his boss and struggles to afford to skate for his dream of Olympic goal. They need each other but they're young and very vulnerable.

The characterization is solid. You feel Ryan's anger at everything and everybody, especially his over-protective mother, as he deals with his sudden disability. You feel Dante's isolation and fear. At the same time, both young men have a strain of honor and strength that makes you cheer for them. The characterization really carried the story.

The negatives: I felt that there was a little problem in making this quite so soon after Ryan's accident. The therapists wouldn't have been pushing him quite so hard at such an early stage in his recovery, but I think that was done for plot reasons. It did give me pause. I did NOT like the author deciding they should have unsafe sex. It added nothing and is a terrible and dangerous message to young men. And I thought, surprisingly enough, that the author ended it too soon. Too many loose threads were left in the story. Having come to like these characters, I wanted to know more about what happened to them.

The negatives are very far outweighed by the positives in this very well-written gay romance.

Power Play
By mnix
Ryan Talonovich was the star of his college hockey team before he was seriously hurt at practice. The injuries he sustained have put him in a wheel chair. It'll be a long time before he can walk again, never mind skate. Ryan is angry and depressed. Watching his teammates skate makes him feels worse. It's at the rink that he meets Dante Espinoza. Dante is an exceptionally talented speed skater working towards his dream of going to the Olympics. Ryan and Dante hit it off and soon, romance follows. Dante has to work hard to afford to skate, his mom doesn't approve of it, and he's got issues with his teammates. Ryan is hurting, mentally and physically, and his mom's over protectiveness is driving him nuts. Will the love Dante and Ryan find in each other's arm see them through the rough road ahead?

Power Play is a wonderful love story. It's full of angst and passion. The emotion pours off of every page. Whether it is Dante's feelings about his lecherous boss or his need for his mother's approval or Ryan's fight to get back on his feet or his struggle to cope with his mother's over protectiveness, you can feel every one of their emotions. The love and desire Dante and Ryan have for each other creates one poignant and erotic moment after another. Power Play has fantastic characterization. You really get to know Dante and Ryan, who they are, where they're going and what makes them tick. The same can be said for every character in the story. The innocent and intense feelings Dante and Ryan have for each other are extremely endearing and sexy. Ryan is shy and nervous. He's strong, but reduced to near helplessness. It doesn't sit well with him and he struggles to find himself again throughout the story. Dante is exactly what Ryan needs. He's protective, honorable, and gorgeous. His own battles are hard won. I felt intimately a part of Dante and Ryan's relationship as it unfolded across the pages. Power Play is uplifting and beautiful, although, I wanted more at the end. I wasn't done reading about Dante and Ryan! Power Play is another example of why J.M. Snyder is one of the best author's of gay romance.

Power Play by J.M. Snyder
By Elisa
This is not at all the novel I was expecting. First of all the characters are much younger than I thought.

Ryan is a 19 years old college student and hockey player who, during a game, was badly injured. Now he is in a wheelchair and ahead of him he has many months, maybe years, of therapy for the hope to walk again, but not more skating for him. He has lost everything: he is not a striking guy, not a good student, he is plain and simple, and maybe a little surly, and being the star of the college hockey team was his change to be someone in college. Now he is a cripped guy living with his parents and with no chance in front of him. And he is also virgin, he likes guys but he has never had the courage to near someone, only an interrupted attempt of blowjob during a frat party.

Dante is a 18 years old boy from the wrong side of the city. After high school he didn't go to college, cause he has no the necessary money, and to be true, neither the inclination. He only loves speed skating, he is very good at it, and his dream is to arrive to Olympics. He works to pay his lessons and the fee to the trials. He is a beautiful latino guy, the dream man of many girls, but he is gay. He has had only a lover, a very bad experience with a schoolmate, but he has not given up the hope to find a boyfriend. Yes, a boyfriend, cause Dante is only an eighteen years old guy, and for him love is someone to call mine, someone to hung out with, someone who, like a knight in shining armour, stand up for him and claim to all the world and above all to the men who bother him, that he is his boyfriend, so hands out from him!

The story is very well written and compelling. Dante's trouble to find the money for simple things but also for the month's rent, his daydreams of glory. Ryan's struggle with the therapy, his bad attitude, very right considering his situation, his relationship with his mother. Oh yes, his mother... cause we are speaking of a nineteen years old guy, not a man, and mothers are still a very present costant in a guy's life. And Ryan's mother is a wonderful character, not the perfect mother of fantasy, but a real mother, bothering but loving.

And then there is the sex, that at that age is the most important thing you have, but it is naive and tender. Sex is also a kiss stolen in the shadow, but sex is also something more, you do careless and with enthusiasm. Condoms are a joke, not a life's necessity... they are teens in heat.
