About the Author
Kwame Alexander is a poet, educator, and author of twenty-one books for children and educators, including Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band, Surf’s Up, Booked, and a middle-grade novel in verse, The Crossover, which was awarded the 2015 Newbery Medal. He is currently the poet laureate of LitWorld, a K-6 literacy organization dedicated to supporting the development of literacy in the world's most vulnerable communities. He lives in Virginia.
Ekua Holmes is a fine artist whose work explores themes of family, relationships, hope, and faith. The first children’s book she illustrated is Carole Boston Weatherford’s Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer, which was a Caldecott Honor Book and a Robert F. Sibert Honor Book and for which she also won the John Steptoe New Talent Illustrator Award. Ekua Holmes lives in Boston.

This should be in every elementary school classroom

This book exceeded my expectations. Every illustration is big and bold - vibrant with color and beautifully constructed with strong elements of collage . The illustrations enrich each poem. The poems themselves are very accessible for young readers, but also speak meaningfully to adults. These are great poems even for those people who say they don't like poetry. You don't have to know anything about the poets they are celebrating in order to enjoy the original works in this book, but if you are acquainted with any of the poets, you will smile as you recognize the affinities and inspirations. For those who are curious about the celebrated poets, there is a brief synopsis of each included at the back of the book. What a great way to encourage youngsters to develop an interest in or love for poetry. Kudos to Alexander et al......I can't wait to give this to my granddaughter for her 8th birthday this week.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough! I heard one of the authors on NPR and he read a few poems,and I ordered the book as soon as I was parked. I love a few things about the book-first,the poems themselves are lovely,and my 8 year old enjoyed them all greatly. She even teared up a little when reading a few of these. Second-the introduction to other poets. Whenever we loved a poem in the book,we were able to spend some time looking up poems from the author that inspired it. This will be a book we come back to often,and I will be purchasing it as a gift often as well.
