Inevitable disaster strikes when the hamster jumps from Sam's pocket into the museum's Hamster Habitat. Luckily, Sam knows his furry friend well enough to pick him out of the sea of the museum's busy rodents. Kenah has created an appealing cast of characters whose actions ring true. Sam is properly contrite after George's close call with danger, and his teacher, Mr. Hopper, metes out a punishment that is both firm and fair. Carter's watercolor illustrations add to the story's appeal and will make this entry in the I Can Read! series a popular choice for emerging readers. Kay Weisman

Katharine Kenah's Family Favorite is her grandmother's grandmother's brownies. The recipe for these delicious, fudgy-rich treats has been passed down for generations. Besides these delightful easy readers about Room 75, Katharine has written The Dream Shop, Eggs Over Easy, and many exciting nonfiction books for children. She lives with her family in Granville, Ohio.

For the reluctant reader

I HAD to give this book a 5 star rating. My daughter is in 2nd grade and hates to read. I feel as though I have discouraged her to read because it takes enforcement, bribery and even punishement just to get her to read a little every day. Worse yet, she showed no interest in chapter books. Well, when I received this book 3 days after I order it (thank you Amazon) we jump right into reading it. (one chapter a day) I loved the way the end of the chapter left my daughter in suspense. I caught her SNEAKING to read the next chapter just to find out what happens next. This is from a child who hates to read. I told her she had to wait until tomorrow which made her more eager the next day to pick up the book. I have purchased a few other level 2 readers like this and hope it gives her the same eagerness when we start to read them too. Oh, and the story is adorable. I recommend this book totally.

I do know that the I Can Read books are very good books and we have loved all of the ones ...

While I don't have extensive knowledge on this book as it was a gift. However, I did notice how well put together it was. The binding seemed strudy. The cover art was cute. My daughter saw this gift before we gave it and actually wanted it just by looking at the cover so that has to say something right? My niece I gave the book to seemed thrilled very with it. I do know that the I Can Read books are very good books and we have loved all of the ones we have purchase.

Great book for a second grader!

Our grandson is in second grade and his favorite books are Betty Birney's books about Humphrey the Hamster. He has all of that series now so when I saw this book about a second grader and his attachment to the classroom pet Hamster, I thought it would be a good "add-on" book to his Humphrey series. Our grandson loves the book and can also read it himself. The Humphrey books are still a little difficult for him to read.
