Very disappointing

I am an anthropology instructor, and I am very disappointed in this book. It was advertised as a new approach to the basic anthropology textbook; supposedly, it relied on "stories" to make the key points and engage the students. Instead, this book has got to be the most boring and uninspiring introduction to anthropology ever published. It is page after page of small print with few photos or illustrations and essentially just the same information that you find in other textbooks. There are no "stories" that I could find.

I bought this book because I respect the authors work and some of the topics drew my interest.

It's essentially a collection of essays and articles that has been published at various times which becomes clear as the level of academic maturity differs from one article to the next. I only give it three stars because the majority of the essays read like magazine articles (which I think they were). Tyson saves the book by his impeccable research, but looses me when he adds his own opinion as being objective fact.

Check the material that he covers, and decide if the price is worth his research and opinion on those subjects. I doubt somebody would find all the chapters of interest to them.

I have been a fan of Donald Tyson's work for years. This book, I think would be a great introduction to those unfamiliar with his other work. I enjoyed it very much. I find this author to be perceptive and responsible in his approach to esoteric subjects.
