About the Author

Majid Fakhry is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the American University of Beirut and has previously held posts at universities in the Middle East and the U.S., including Associate Professor at Georgetown University. His many publications include "Ethical Theories in Islam, Philosophy, Dogma, and the Impact of Greek Thought in Islam" and "A History of Islamic Philosophy". He was born in Lebanon and now lives in the United States.

Finally, a real translation

This is by far the clearest and most faithful rendering of the Qur'an into English. I would recommend this translation for anyone who actually wants to understand precisely what the Qur'an is saying, without the old fashioned fuzzy imprecision of translations such as Arberry's. I used to recommend Pickthall's version to students; this one is vastly superior. It is also one of the few translations with a decent (albeit minimal) scholarly apparatus.In short, it promises to remain the best and most accurate English version of the Qur'an for some time to come.

Modern English Quran Review

I have read many translations of Al Quran, and although I was somewhat disappointed with this one, it has its merits. The english is more similar to everyday language than other translation, so it is easier to understand. Some passages (for example, arabic figures of speach that are not to be taken literally) that might have been ambiguous due to rigid arabic-to-english conversion in other English translations are clearer in this version. However, translating Al Quran into modern English has its drawbacks: without the arabic idioms left in (as, for example, in A.J Arberry's translation), the suras are not as pretty. Even with old english or brittish translations, you are able to have a glimpse of the beauty of the arabic Quran, but with modern English, it reads as if it is an everyday conversation, and the suras sound less inspirational, in my opinion. The other thing that this translator does which did not work for me was putting footnotes in the text of the suras and short explanations in the bottom margin of the pages. The original Quran did not have commentary, so I don't see why the English translation should, seeing as it is a translation and not an exposition of the Quran. All in all, this one is ok, not great.

Most enchanting and understandable translation

I was happy to see a translation at last in which the language used is clear and easy to read and understand,This translation is extremly easy for all age groups to understand and will help all especially the younger generations of muslims whose mother tongue is not Arabic to truly understand what the Quran says and teaches

Normally, I have a lot of trouble reading through stories in Spanish, but that is not the case with this one. The stories are pretty easy to follow along with, and the vocabulary lists and activities after the story help comprehension a lot! Gritty, and true- it's the small stuff that counts

I am a Vietnam era combat veteran, 101st Airborne Div. - 1968. So, I've been there. Grangie Korff has the knack to tell the soldier's tale that takes the reader past the blood and gore and explosive action. He tells the true story of what it is like to be there on the line with hundreds of other men willing to risk their lives in an instant for the unit and for, especially, each other. He endures amazing hardship, incredible risks to his life and limb and yet manages to go through it all with a hard, inner determination to always keep his humanity. He tells it all, from the heart. His eye witness descriptions are vivid and down to earth, bringing the reader right along on the dusty, sweaty powder stained trail into real combat. It's not glorious. It's not valorous (though there is valor galore). It is Grangie just slogging through no matter what. He uses a rare writer's gift for keeping in mind the importance of the tiny details that make a soldiers life both a hell and a heaven. From ill fitting boots, to the need to be loved by a kitten. From laughing at the sight of awkward though deadly enemy troops, to finding keen interest in learning how to track deadly enemy stragglers. This book is one every war story enthusiast should have in his or her library. It is the meat and potatoes of human warfare soldiers have been experiencing since humans first threw a rock at a poacher.

Intense, gripping, unforgettable

This is the best book I have read on the South African/Angolan bush war. Most books are written by men who were professional soldiers, for whom combat operations are often described rather like military briefings: detached, "objective" and tactical. Korff writes like the best of writers. His text is close to the skin, his images and similes are compelling and original. when he describes fear, he says he can feel the cold eel move in his belly. His writing is so close that the reader can almost feel the sweat stinging his eyes and the smell of death. The book is also unflinchingly honest, and he writes of his actions and exploits without being either confessional or bragardly. He simply says what happened, without holding anything back. Further, unless one is particularly prudish (then why would you read a book like this anyway, you nitwit?) you can't help admiring, and perhaps envying, the young fellow's wild ways. I was rooting for him from beginning to end, from his sexual shenanigans with his high school teacher, through his street fight with some toughs, through paratrooper selection, and through the bush war. His book should make paratroopers proud, even though he does not for a moment glorify the hell and horror that such an experience might mean.

Granger Korff's Book: "19 with a Bullet"

This is one of the Best Books I have read on the South West Africa / Angola Border War
from the personal point of view of Granger Korff who joined the South African National Defense Force
at the age of 19 years. I think it has a valuable insight for our "Returning Veterans" who have
the same issues with their Mental and Physical Health that Mr. Korff suffered, and still does suffer,
to a certain extent, to this present day. I loaned this Book to a friend of mine who is a US Army,
Gulf War/Iraq Veteran who is struggling with his own Demons, and he told me that he was comforted by
Mr. Korff's experiences and the way in which He came to terms with his Army service, after his return
to Civilian Life.
For most people in the USA, myself included, the reporting and history of this conflict was/and still is,
almost nil. I, myself, did not support the old South African Government's policy of Apartheid,
and I actively boycotted South African products, however, this is History and I do want to be informed about it.
The fact that this Angolan Border War was backed by Russia with large amounts of Armaments,
Transport (for the Cuban Army from Cuba to Angola, East German Paratroops from Europe, etc)
and Money, was a major factor in the breakdown of the Soviet Union.
The other major factor of course, was the Russian's 10 year occupation of Afghanistan (1979-1989).
We as a Nation have much to learn from literature like "19 with a Bullet" Mr. Korff does not glorify War,
but He does offer a very good insight to how a Young Man reacted to his experiences in this War.

Compelling Fantasy

I enjoyed this book. The mythology was fascinating, and while not yet fully explored, I'm very interested in the world the author has created. The central conceit is very alluring, as the main character is rescued from horrible torture by a dragon in human form. I don't really enjoy the whole torture/rape stuff in books--that's not why I read fantasy, but this author dealt with it in a way that didn't have me putting the book down. At times, certain explanations (or the characters requiring them) got a little repetitive, though never tedious. I get the sense that the author is only scratching the surface here, and I'm looking forward to more books continuing the story. As it stands, the arch is complete, but I'd be in for more from these characters, and getting to know more about what makes them tick. There's a lot of opportunity here with some truly evil supernatural baddies that I'd love to see go down. At times the writing is too on-the-surface, with feelings, ideas and explanations revealed directly and without much subtlety, but overall I was in this for the easy, entertaining nature of the read and the very compelling world creation.

I really liked this book!

So I want to start of this review by saying some parts of this book might be hard for some to read, I know it was for me so I just wanted to give a warning.

Okay I absolutely love dragon shifters and I have to say the way the author wrote these shifters in this book was awesome! Love the way that Nakiirn was so protective of Ahndrai who was his treasure.
Now it does go into a lot of detail on what happens to Ahndrai which I will be honest and say it was really hard to read and I felt so bad for him to have been tortured like that for so long and not only by the vampire but by other evil creatures too it was just so horrible.

I really liked these two men together though and loved the way this author wrote these characters. There was some action in this book and some steam too between these two men. I do not want to go to much into this book and give away any spoilers so I will leave this review with... I really liked this book!

Read This - Please!

I was so deep into this world that when it ended it was jarring. Fantastic writing, story and characters. Best of all, dragon babies! The blurb was about a human being killed/raped over and over by a vampire and while it was uncomfortable, the rest of the story completely overwhelmed it and left me remembering the love of a dragon and his treasure, not the pain. There is no cliffhanger but there's room for a lot more and I hope this will be a series. Even more than that, I hope the next book will be out yesterday.

Great book with practical advice

This book is a practical guide for engaging employees. Everything in here is actionable. No theories or long winded writing. The overall point is summed up in a quote in the book from the CEO of Campbell's Soup: "To win in the marketplace . . . you must first win in the workplace." If you don't have an engaged workforce, your business just won't grow.

Good step by step instructions for engaging employees, implementing a company survey that works, getting better at communications and retaining employees through engagement.

This book is full of strong how to advice. Because there is no fluff, you can read the book in a couple hours and have a lot of smart ideas to use in your workplace.

Practical guide for managers. Recommend this book for anyone managing a team.

This book breaks down the nuts and bolts of employee engagement. It really all begins and ends with the manager. I appreciated the ideas presented and the 8 week step by step guide. It's like a business plan to increase engagement. I would have liked for the book to include more real world case studies (there were a few). The book does highlight the most important aspects of creating an engaged team. And, in my opinion, the weekly 1 on 1s are the most under valued tactic that can generate the highest results. Speaking of results, the book also discusses how to measure and track engagement - it's easier than you think!

Highly recommend this book for anyone trying to tackle one of the toughest managerial issues of all time

As a long-time front-line manager responsible for hiring, evaluating and developing people, I wish this book was available much earlier! Kevin offers immediately actionable advice and delivers it in a compelling way, with hard facts and stories we as managers can all relate to. His framework for implementing employee engagement is incredibly useful and actionable, and does not require hiring him or any other consultant to make it work. I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to tackle one of the toughest managerial issues of all time.
